Mandatory “Off-service” rotations are designed to provide the Emergency Medicine resident with the diverse medical education required to function as a well rounded Emergency Physician. These rotations provide clinical knowledge and procedural skills that are best provided by the specialists of the given field. Our focus wiht regard to off-service rotation is Critical Care with a few others interspersed. Residents spend less than 20% of their residency training out of the ED.
Residents additionally have the opportunity to pursue professional interests during their Elective blocks. While residents may use their elective blocks to complete key activities related to their Scholarly Tracks, they may also rotate on any medical service at University Hospital for their elective. Popular electives include Emergency Ultrasound, Cardiology/Electrophysiology, Sports Medicine and Palliative Care. External (non-UH) electives are approved on an individual basis. Residents have completed electives in foreign countries such as Ghana and have participated in relief trips to Haiti.
