FAQs

Q: What are Student Health Services?

A: We are an office dedicated to caring for students, providing medical care, mental health care, and immunization tracking for students at the Rutgers Health Sciences Campus at Newark.

Q: If I am an incoming Student who has not yet matriculated, am I eligible for services?

A: We will review your immunization records. Your coverage for medical care begins with matriculation. If you need assistance identifying a healthcare provider for pre-matriculation requirements, give us a call.

Q: Why must I have a 2-step PPD upon entering my program?

A: Some people infected with tuberculosis may have negative PPD initially (most commonly because of a long-standing infection). However, they will respond to the second PPD placed. This is called a booster phenomenon.

Q: Can I choose which Rutgers Student Health Services office I attend for medical care?

A: Rutgers University offers health services at multiple locations at each of the regional campuses.  The health centers collaborate to provide services to help meet the needs of the students and to promote a culture of wellness throughout our University Community.  To better serve the specific needs of students, student health centers are designated for use by students based upon the student’s program location and school of enrollment.

Students are assigned to the health center designated by their school or program. Should students need care at a Rutgers student health services center other than their designated site, they should contact that health center for information on availability of services, hours of operation, and fees assessed. Students should keep in mind that services and fees may vary across the health centers.
