Applications are only accepted and reviewed when submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

All documents must be submitted through ERAS.

Application deadline: December 31, 2023.

Applications from IMGs are accepted. A medical degree obtained within 3 years ofapplication is encouraged. Evidence of continued clinical work and/or productivescholarly/research activity is preferred. Experience in the US medical system is not required but is highly advised. ECFMG certification is required at the time of application for interview considerations.

The Residency Program does not sponsor H1B visas. IMGs are encouraged to obtain ECFMG sponsorship as a J1 Exchange Visitor.

Interviews take place between November and January of the application cycle. Currently, interviews are performed virtually. Our program does not send rejection letters.

Although scores on USMLE examinations are an important factor in our selection process, there are no official score requirements for applying to our program. We prefer to evaluate each applicant on his or her own individual merits.

Call on regular floor rotations is every fourth night until 7:00 p.m. Floor residents go home and do not stay overnight in the hospital. In the ICU, call is generally also every fourth night until 8:00 p.m, although there is some minor variability in each hospital. Two of our ICU rotations require one 24 hour call within 4 weeks. Residents leave no later than 9:00 a.m. after night shifts. Attendings and fellows in the Department of Medicine are available at night to assist and teach night float and ICU on-call residents.

Just to name a few of the facilities:

• Access to computer systems throughout the university and hospital.


• Computerized retrieval of labs, radiographic studies, and outpatient records at all training sites.


• Access to a state-of-the-art library is open seven days a week. Full-text journals available online.


• Meal Stipends: In addition to yearly stipend residents are given a meal stipend for all calls or night float shifts.


• Parking: Available at all affiliated hospitals. We offer a "pre-tax" payroll deduction for parking expenses on Rutgers campus.


• As University employees, NJMS residents have access to many university facilities including daycare (for a fee) and a state-of-the-art gym.


• All interns receive white coats, with laundry service available.


• Lactation Rooms - available at all training sites

Yes. All Rutgers residents receive $1,300 orientation pay at the start of their employment and $1,300 per year for educational allowance. Our residents are also funded to travel to one academic/scientific conference per year, if they are the first author of a poster or presentation.

No, moonlighting is not permitted.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program does not sponsor observerships. If you are currently enrolled in medical school, you can visit the NJMS website to inquire about away rotations.
