Program Structure

Our main focus is on EDUCATION, not service.

While the cornerstone of our program is the Med-Peds continuity clinic, our residents get a truly integrated educational experience through combined electives, Med-Peds office practice, and transitional care.

An understanding of the spectrum of disease within the aging process is critical in a Med-Peds resident's education. Residents are given the opportunity to combine any of their electives, affording them the experience to compare and contrast disease processes within a given sub specialty, as well as refine their ability to transition patients from pediatric centered care to adult centered care.

Med-Pedsresidents also take full advantage of the learning opportunities in the individual departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. While rotating through the inpatient wards and ambulatory clinics, our residents are viewed as "equals" with our pediatric and medicine residentcolleagues.

Both categorical programs utilize a '13-block' schedule of 2-4 week-long rotations, 13 blocks per year. Med-Peds residents rotate through the departments of Medicine and Pediatrics 3 blocks at a time, except for blocks 7 through 10, where they do 4 blocks in a row of either Medicine or Pediatrics. The other exception to this rule occurs at the end of the PGY-2 year when the residents transition to the PGY-3 year by spending 6 blocks in either Medicine or Pediatrics to ensure seasonal variation of pediatric illnesses across their residency career. Both categorical programs also use a night float system to facilitate resident learning and continuity of care.

The inpatient services of both departments are run on a team concept. Each team typically consists of one attending, one senior resident, 2 interns, and 2-4 medical students from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Information exchange is constant as education happens at all levels.
