The mission of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
is to maintain and enhance a uniform standard of excellence in the areas of
clinical service, research and teaching, and to create an environment in which
synergistic interactions among these components of professional activity lead
to improved patient care and continued academic growth.
Our goals and objectives include the development of a clinical
service, which is recognized for its excellence at the national level, as well
as one that provides consultative, administrative and professional support to
other hospitals and industrial entities. We also wish to develop the capability
to serve as a reference laboratory for the full spectrum of clinical trials,
and to stay at the cutting edge of diagnostic methodologies.
Our research goals include the development of integrated basic
research programs, translational research with short to medium-term clinical
results, and a focus on infection, immunology and cancer biology.
Our educational goals are to be part
of a seamlessly integrated curriculum, to provide electives of sufficient variety
and interest to attract students to a career in pathology, and to develop collaborative
teaching efforts with other Rutgers schools and faculty.
