Affiliate Care and Teaching Sites

Medical students and resident physicians utilize facilities at University Hospital in Newark; Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange and Saddle Brook - as well as multiple free-standing ambulatory care centers; the Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in East Orange and Lyons; Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside.

University Hospital :



Inpatient and outpatient responsibilities are included in the training experience. University Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center with physiatry consultation services on Trauma Services (including brain-injured and spinal cord-injured patients), as well as hospital consults for variety of disorders including ICU. A large number of musculoskeletal and spine clinics are present as well as considerable electrodiagnosis exposure for residents.

Doctor's Office Complex (DOC) :

University Rehabilitation Associates practice location is in Suites 3100 and 3300 of the DOC. The outpatient rotation includes experience in the Center for Rehabilitation Services, a 9,000 square foot area in the new Doctors Office Center on the Newark campus with a heavy emphasis on acute musculoskeletal and neuromuscular problems, as well as exposure to axial and peripheral injections and electrodiagnosis.

Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation :



Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation (KIR) is the largest comprehensive rehabilitation center in the United States. It has over 320 licensed rehabilitation beds in four primary inpatient facilities. Accredited by both the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), the Kessler facilities serve as the primary inpatient training sites for PM&R residents. Outpatient rotations are also present for neurological and musculoskeletal experiences.

Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation is consistently ranked as one of the top five rehabilitation hospitals in the nation and best in the East by U.S. News & World Report.

Rotations where residents and medical students are placed include:

  • KIR in West Orange with inpatient spinal cord injury (model system), traumatic brain injury, amputation and stroke services along with an outpatient musculoskeletal and electrodiagnosis service.
  • KIR in Saddle Brook with inpatient services.

Kessler Foundation is a public charity dedicated to improving quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

Kessler Foundation strives to improve the lives of people with physical and cognitive disabilities caused by stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain and spinal cord injury, and other chronic neurologic and musculoskeletal conditions. Over the past decade, Kessler Foundation has invested almost $50 million in the work of its Research Center, where investigators develop ways to help people with disabilities overcome obstacles to leading full and productive lives in our communities.

Kessler Foundation maintains two locations in West Orange, New Jersey. Kessler Foundation Research Center, which adjoins Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, houses the support staff, a medical library, and meeting rooms in addition to five of the six specialized laboratories:

  • Human Performance and Engineering Research
  • Outcomes & Assessments Research
  • Spinal Cord Injury Research
  • Stroke Rehabilitation Research
  • Traumatic Brain Injury Research :
  • Neuropsychology and Neuroscience Research is located at the Executive Drive facility, which also houses the Foundation’s Grant Programs, Development, Communications, and administrative offices.

East Orange VA Medical Center :

This 600 bed general hospital has both a Rehabilitation Medicine Service and a Spinal Cord Injury Service. Approximately six to eight months of clinical rotations include a combination of consultative and primary inpatient care for cardiac rehabilitation, neurologic disorders (with extensive electrodiagnostic experience), and general medical/surgical disabilities services. There is also a spinal cord injury rotation and an extensive outpatient experience with dedicated injection clinics and training in musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Children's Specialized Hospital :

Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, NJ, is a 60-bed pediatric facility with extensive inpatient and outpatient health care services. The two-month pediatric rotation includes extensive ambulatory exposure including pediatric electrodiagnosis.
