Outdoor events

  • Trail Hiking
    • South Mountain Reservation: located a mere 10 minutes from the VA and right down South Orange Avenue, provides multiple hiking trails, two dog parks, and a gorgeous view of the Manhattan skyline
    • Bear Mountain State Park: a short ride up Palisades Parkway in to New York State will provide steep terrain and a view for the perfect Instagram selfie
  • Biking
    • Whether road racing is your thing or mountain biking, New Jersey provides prime scenery for a ride with friends. Bike along the Hudson River in Liberty State Park through Jersey City, or if you're feeling adventurous, make the short trek to Manhattan and rent a Citi bike to explore the Big Apple
  • Tough Mudder
    • At Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ you can run through fire and jump over puddles of mud…for fun! Every year a group of talented young men and women complete this grueling obstacle course
    • Beast the Spartan Race at the Mountain Creek Resort this Spring as you tackle some 30 obstacles over a 12 mile race course

Sports

  • Soccer
  • Basketball
    • Recruit your medical students and take advantage of the brand new floors in the NJMS gymnasium for a game of pickup basketball after work
  • Hockey
    • Join the NJMS ice hockey community and play for the Medwings! Foster the medicine vs dental rivalry at practice games and the annual charity game at the Prudential Center (you might even meet some of the NJ Devils!)
  • Kickboxing at CKO
    • What better way to relieve your work related frustration than by punching and kicking things that won't fight back? Join a local CKO for one of the best workouts you've ever had

Running group
Running around the hospital or running in your first 5k, we just can't get enough! A few of our residents are avid marathon runners and would love to share their peace with you. If you're looking to run in your first road race, some races close by are the annual Cherry Blossom 10k (beautiful and flat) or the Newport Half Marathon through Liberty State Park. If 26.2 miles isn't in your future, there are plenty of iPhone apps to motivate you! Nike+ RunClub, MapMyRun, and Couch to 5k just to name a few

Yoga
Yoga is a great way to tone your muscles and calm your mind to stay present in the crazy world of medicine. Here is a list of some discounted or free yoga classes in the community:

  • Lululemon in Montclair, NJ (520 Bloomfield Ave) @ 10 AM every Sunday. You can try out different teachers in the community and their mats
  • Athleta in Hoboken, NJ (316 Washington St) offers free partner and individual vinyasa flow classes taught by rotating teachers in the community on Sundays in store

There are many studios (especially in the Montclair and Bloomfield area) that offer “first class/week free.” Most studios in our area teach vinyasa, or a flowing style, of yoga, but other styles including bikram (if you're looking to really sweat) are out there as well. Keep in mind that yoga means “to yoke,” or to connect the mind and body with the breath
