The Host Response to Injury - MSBS 5015Q

This course will provide a comprehensive narrative of the host response to injury and associated post-injury complications from clinical, cellular and molecular perspectives. The clinical part, starting from real life situations, will present the patho-physiological cascade and the whole body response including the development of shock, organ dysfunction as well as aspects of therapy and recovery from injuries. The cellular component will discuss responses of the major cell types of the innate immune response (neutrophils, macrophages, lymphocytes, endothelium, and bone marrow cells). The molecular part of the course will describe signaling mechanisms leading to altered gene expression and immune cell activation. The course will be presented by practicing surgeons and speakers of expertise in particular fields.  The course is best suited for students pursuing careers in medicine, medical research and nursing and would also fit students with general interest in the inflammatory response, immunology and associated pathophysiology.  The exam format is short questions at midterm with 30% weight and essays for cumulative final with 70% weight.
