This course will provide an introduction to the theory and practice of bio-medical ethics, beginning with the theoretical underpinnings of ethical discourse, and rapidly proceeding to case-based discussions of ethical issues in clinical care and clinical research. Topics to be considered will include informed consent, allocation of scarce resources, conflict of interest, therapeutic misconception, vulnerable populations, autonomy and paternalism, palliative care, futility, end-of-life decision-making, right to die and organ donation. Readings will include case studies and original literature. Evaluation will include quizzes and a short paper on a topic of the students’ choice. Both Masters and Doctoral students may take this course for credit.
