The Newark Health Science Campus of Rutgers SGS is located in the University Heights area of Newark, NJ. Founded in 1666, Newark is steeped in history and simultaneously is also well renowned for its urban revitalization. Today, Newark is home to top educational, research and healthcare institutions. On our campus, you will find we share space with or are connected to Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, University Hospital, and the Rutgers Cancer Center of New Jersey. Our location gives us proximity to the Branch Brook Park (home of the annual cherry blossom festival), the Newark Museum (the largest museum in NJ), Cathedral Basilica (a beautiful Gothic Revival architecture), as well as Newark Downtown (where you can get everything from contemporary to traditional food and art destinations to performance centers). The Newark Penn Station located in Newark downtown will connect you with many destinations including New York City. Newark also houses the Newark Liberty International Airport which can connect you to 48 countries in the world.

Housing application
To be eligible for Rutgers Student Housing applicants who receive the offer of admission from Rutgers School of Graduate Studies must sign and return the offer of admission. Following the receipt of your signed acceptance, the Rutgers University – Newark Office of Housing and Residence Life will send you an application link. The link will be sent to your@gsbs.rutgers.edu email address.

Graduate students, medical students, and dental students share living space in the 180 West Market Street student housing. This building is connected to the Medical Science Building through an elevated, covered walkway. Students living here also have easy access to parking and the GSA student lounge. The building is managed by the Rutgers University – Newark Office of Housing and Residence Life. 180 West Market Street is located at the corner of 12th Avenue and West Market Street, next to Parking Deck #1. At 180 West Market Street, there are a range of apartment types available for students to choose from including private studio and one-bedroom apartments, as well as shared two- and three-bedroom apartments. Eligible applicants for these apartments include full time matriculated RBHS students. More information from the Office of Housing and Residence Life:

  • Several suites have special accommodations for students with disabilities. 
  • All rooms have both wired and wireless internet access and telephone, and digital cable.
  • Each bedroom is furnished with a desk, dresser, and closet on each side for each student.
  • Each Apartment is equipped with a fully functional kitchen including a full fridge, a microwave and stove. 
  • Dining room furniture dining table and dining chairs.
  • Furnishes Share a common living room, bathroom, and vanity area.
  • Each suite is equipped with seasonal central air conditioning.
  • 24-hour food kiosk in the building, ATM and mail locker units. 
  • 24-hour laundry facilities in the building.

Off-campus – Rutgers Student Housing

15 Washington Street is located 1.7 miles from the Newark Health Science Campus and is also managed by the Rutgers University – Newark Office of Housing and Residence Life. More from their website: 15 Washington Apartments houses all of our Graduate Students as well as some transfer and returning upper-class students. This is the only university-affiliated housing building for Rutgers-Newark graduate students.15 Washington Street Apartments Residents that desire to have reserved car parking on campus, must purchase a resident parking pass through the Department of Transportation Services.  The closest parking area for residential students is Deck 1 located at 200 University Avenue, Newark, NJ.  This location is approximately 4 blocks from 15 Washington Street Apartments. Off-campus– Other

Students on our campus often begin their education on-campus but move to more off-campus locations within Newark or in the neighboring towns of Harrison, Kearny, Ironbound, Bloomfield, Montclair or Verona.
