Sports Leadership Camp

The NJMS Public Health Research Institute (PHRI) provided a Sports Leadership Camp at Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz High School for Newark public high school students. Students were engaged in several training modules set up by coaches and athletic trainers as the sports and leadership camps were taught by professional athletes, college coaches and sports consultants. Jim Norris, director of Community Outreach in PHRI, conducted many workshops and trainings along with many staff members and volunteers in this program.

Other NJMS affiliates who participated include John “Jack” Farrell, program analyst for the University of Behavioral Healthcare Violence Institute of New Jersey, Barry Kreiswirth, PhD, director of the PHRI TB Center, and Denard Coleman, program director of the Waiting Room Parents Program, which is a part of NJMS' Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine.

The PHRI sports and healthy lifestyle camps focus on football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, and ice hockey. Multiple workshops during the camp include testings for health promotion and sex education, concussion impact, cardiac screening, NCAA registration, and much more.
