PHRI Summer Program

PHRI Summer Program Graduation

The PHRI Summer High School Research Internship Program graduated 14 participating students as they completed six weeks of lab research of various topics with assistance from PHRI Principal Investigators and mentors. Each year the program serves minority high school students and their science teachers who live in or near Newark. The PHRI Summer Program’s goal is to nurture the students’ interest in science through hands-on laboratory research experience. Mr. Yaakov Saturen, a science teacher with more than twenty years of experience in inner city high schools, is the director of this program. ┬áSome of the research topics included the differentiation of Staphylococcus aureus, the function and structure of the human and rodent blood brain barrier, and the effect of transcription complex facilitators on lethal stress, to name a few.

Support for the summer 2013 program was provided by the Victoria Foundation, the Prudential Foundation, the Public Health Research Institute, New Jersey Medical School, the National Summer Association, American Chemical Society-Project SEED and private individual donations.
