Message from the Director

I welcome you to the comprehensive New Jersey Medical School Cancer Center of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. We have established a vibrant research program in our initial phase of 100 faculty, staff and graduate students presently housed in our state-of-the-art facility. Our interdisciplinary program involves both junior and senior faculty in an open laboratory setting to promote interaction. Faculty are drawn from 10 academic departments, a mixture of basic science and clinical departments facilitating a diverse perspective to innovative cancer research. We anticipate continued and expanded growth over the next several years. In addition to 3 floors (25,000 sq. ft. each) of laboratory and shared equipment space, the Cancer Center has multiple core facilities including a 20,000 sq. ft. AALAC accredited mouse barrier facility, a shared cell culture facility, a campus-wide Molecular Imaging Core, the Center for Advanced Proteomics.

Although opened only in October 2006, this 9 story, 220,000 square foot dedicated facility for research, clinical and educational activities is already the focus of multiple campus-wide activities. In particular, the programs include almost 100 faculty in the broader Cancer Center Community at Health Scicens campus at Newark. Joint educational and community outreach programs are described separately on the website. The ambulatory cancer clinical program, housed currently in adjacent space, has not yet relocated to the Cancer Center but interactions such as site-specific tumor boards already meet within the new facility.

The Cancer Center also supervises the successful Cancer Clinical Trials Program which particularly addresses access to advanced care for underserved populations. I encourage you to peruse our website and to participate in our mission to provide the benefits of research, clinical care and prevention to patients and the community.

Sincerely,

Ian Whitehead, Ph.D.
Professor and Director
