Overview

Dr. John Bogden has taught nutrition, environmental health, and public health to first- and second-
year medical students for more than 40 years. He also teaches graduate students, and is Course
Director for the School of Graduate Studies course "Medical Nutrition and Disease", which he taught
in the Fall 2019 Semester for the fourth consecutive year. Dr. Bogden is also Course Director for a
popular 4th year NJMS independent study course entitled "Special Topics in Preventive Medicine";
more than 130 students have taken this course since it was first offered by Dr. Bogden in 2002.

Dr. Bogden has sponsored and mentored research projects of more than 40 undergraduate,
graduate, medical, and high school students. His research has focused on trace element and mineral
nutrition and toxicity. He is an author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles or book chapters on this
and related topics. In 1991 he was the recipient of the ?Labcatal First Prize for Scientific Research in
the Field of Trace Elements?. Dr. Bogden has been awarded 31 grants as principal investigator to
support his research. He and Leslie Klevay, M.D., are editors of the book ?Clinical Nutrition of the
Essential Trace Elements and Minerals: The Guide for Health Professionals? (Humana Press, 2000).
He is currently a member of the editorial board of the journal Nutrition Research.

Dr. Bogden?s research has focused on trace element and mineral nutrition and toxicity. He has studied lead poisoning, including study of interactions between essential minerals or vitamins and lead. Dr. Bogden has also conducted research on the effects of micronutrients on immune functions in older people and in those with HIV infection. His work has resulted in publication of more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and monographs, primarily in publications concerned with nutrition and environmental toxicology. His experimental research findings include being the first to recognize the presence of micronutrient deficiencies early in the course of HIV-1 infection. Other research results include finding that serum selenium concentrations at the low end of the normal range early in human pregnancy predict low birth weight, and discovering that the summertime increase in blood lead in young Newark children is associated with an increase in serum levels of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D. Both age and race influenced this relationship. In addition, Dr. Bogden and his colleagues have demonstrated that variation in human gastrointestinal potassium excretion arises from both variation in dietary potassium intake and substantial inter-individual differences in renal and gastrointestinal handling of potassium. They also demonstrated that dietary amylase resistant starch reduces the loss of bone mineral density during weight cycling in experimental animals and that likely mechanisms for this effect are increased bone calcium and magnesium concentrations and lower bone lead concentrations. In 1991 Dr. Bogden was the recipient of the ?Labcatal First Prize for Scientific Research in the Field of Trace Elements?, and presented the Labcatal Prize Lecture in Les Deux Alpes, France.
Dr. Bogden has been awarded 31 grants as principal investigator to support his work. This includes funding from the American Heart Association, Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc., SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare, the National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative for Research in Hazardous and Toxic Substances, the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. He and Leslie Klevay, M.D., are editors of the book ?Clinical Nutrition of the Essential Trace Elements and Minerals: The Guide for Health Professionals" (Humana Press, 2000).
