Current Research

Regulation of growth and differentiation in cancer

My research has been directed to an understanding of cancer growth and differentiation and has focused particularly on cancer of the liver and colon. In recent years I have investigated actions of dietary derived natural products on cancer cell proliferation and differentiation. The compounds that were studied included short-chain fatty acids, isothiocyanates, allyl sulfur compounds and polyphenolic molecules. These compounds can act through a variety of mechanisms including modification of histone side-chains, inhibition of protein kinases and anti-oxidant effects. These effects can be exerted by a number of molecules derived from fruits and vegetables.
