Heritage Month Celebration

LGBT Pride Month Celebration, June 2018

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month), a celebration to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The Stonewall riots were a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States.  The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and Allies community has suffered for over a century from homophobia, transphobia, isolation, and invisibility.  During June 2018, NJMS continued to recognize that there are trainees, faculty, staff and patients who are proudly LGBTQA identified. Their visibility and inclusion is critical to addressing unique health issues, eliminating health disparities, and optimizing health outcomes for the LGBT community.

Festivities this month included a LGBT Flag Unveiling Ceremony; a Mentoring Session for LGBT Trainees, Faculty, and Allies; a webinar entitled Overview of SGM-Related Activities and Training Opportunities at NIH; and a pane presentation on LGBTQ Excellence at NJMS and University Hospital.

The four events were co-sponsored by the NJMS Diversity Committee, the LGBT Taskforce, the Office for Diversity and Community Engagement, and the 19 basic and clinical science departments at NJMS.
