Program Overview and Mission Statement
The goal of the Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine Graduate program is to develop Ph.D. level professionals who can function in an academic environment or in a research setting in the biotechnology private sector. With these goals in mind, we have developed a program with advanced graduate courses focusing on cell biology and molecular medicine, seminars by world-renowned guest speakers, and journal club meetings to keep abreast with the most advanced development in research.
Research interests:
The Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine program is committed to understanding the molecular mechanisms of disease by bridging the gap between physiology and molecular biology. Our belief is that the understanding of disease can be achieved optimally by integrating the different aspects of the disease, i.e. from the whole organism to subcellular components, and by the use of complementary techniques to acquire a global view of the problem. We have created Research Institutes to gather together faculty with common research interests but complementary views and technical approaches. For example, the Cardiovascular Research Institute is dedicated to the understanding of molecular mechanisms in adult and congenital cardiovascular disease. The research interests in the Department include physiological and molecular mechanisms of disease, mechanisms of cardiovascular control, molecular mechanisms of cardiac hypertrophy and failure, functional genomics and proteomics in heart and vascular diseases, developmental biology of the heart, pathophysiology and electrophysiology of the heart, roles of adenylyl cyclase in the heart, signal transduction of the cardiovascular system, development and stem cell biology.
