About

Students applying to the Masters Program can apply to be part of one of the following tracks: Medical scholars track, Dental scholars track, or Biomedical Research scholars track. Graduates from this Masters program pursue Medical School, Dental School, Ph.D. education or careers in biopharma. Students who are part of a particular track get (1) specialized advising from medical and dental school faculty as well as biopharma industry professionals (2) eligibility to request specialized courses e.g. courses in the medical and dental school (3) priority for volunteering opportunities. This program has a flexible curricula and builds on the existing strengths of basic and clinical faculty in the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) and Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM).Learn more about the program, the SGS Newark campus, and academic life at SGS Newark through the three short podcasts listed below. 

 

 

Degree types

Students enrolled in the Master's program have the opportunity to obtain either a Master of Science in Biomedical Science (MS) or a Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) degree.The MS requires a 5-credit research thesis while the MBS is predominantly based on coursework. Students have the flexibility to switch between MS and MBS.

  • One on one academic advising for all students
  • Courses taught by clinical and basic sciences research faculty from Rutgers NJMS and RSDM
  • Opportunity to take medical or dental school courses with students from NJMS or RSDM (limited enrollment)
  • Ability to complete the program in one year, or to follow a less intense curriculum over 3-4 semesters or even longer on a part-time basis
  • Part-time enrollment available, with many evening courses in core subjects
  • Students obtain laboratory research experience with nationally and internationally renowned medical or dental school faculty
  • Ability to conduct Masters thesis research

Master’s students at the SGS-Newark Health Science Campus can obtain one of the following concentrations by completing the curriculum indicated under the corresponding link.
