Diversity

Rutgers NJMS has a tradition of commitment to diversity and has fostered a spirit of inclusiveness for its highly diverse community, faculty, staff, and students.  Our mission is to develop individuals underrepresented in medicine and other health professions, as well as to champion cultural competency, community service, and humanism in all aspects of medical education.  We at NJMS are resolutely responding to the need for a diverse healthcare workforce that resembles the diversity of today’s patients. For further details of institutional efforts related to diversity please visit our Office for Diversity & Community Engagement.

Our residency program and department is not only supportive of these institutional efforts, but is an institutional and specialty leader in these. Our residency is comprised of over 50% women and 29% URiM, while our department has over 50% women faculty members and 22% URiM. Below are our resident and faculty profiles in diversity.

Visiting sub-Internship Program for Underrepresented in Medicine (VIP-UiM): At Rutgers-NJMS and University Hospital-Newark, our goal is develop individuals underrepresented in medicine (UiM), as well as to champion cultural competency, community service, and humanism in all aspects of medical education. We specifically aim to foster the education and inclusion of physicians from groups represented in our patient base, which is over 50% African American, over 35% Hispanic, with many Spanish-speakers and a significant portion - approximately 8 percent - Portuguese speaking. To that end, we have implemented a program to specifically support the needs and growth of students from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in medicine.
