It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at Rutgers Health Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center Program, the academic residency program of New Jersey Medical School. While you may notice that the legacy NJMS program still exists on the ACGME site, all 10 residents per year for our combined program have been recruited jointly. Our residency program is a fully accredited four-year program. We currently have 10 residents per post graduate year and our residents are a diverse group of 40 individuals that share a common interest in women’s health and patient care. Our residents have exposure to academic generalists and subspecialists, all of whom are dedicated to resident education and serve as teachers and mentors.
Our program provides residents with a rigorous program with an in-depth exposure to all aspects of obstetrics, gynecology and women’s health and a depth and breathe of experience that is difficult to match – the combination of the high acuity of an urban inner city hospital with a high volume suburban community hospital provides our residents with excellent surgical and obstetrical experience. Our faculty are leaders in their respective fields of interest. Our program provides specialty services in all the major areas in Obstetrics and Gynecology at both hospitals, including but not limited to Breast Disease, Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Menopause Care, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Comprehensive Family Planning, and Transgender Care.
All subspecialties in our discipline are represented on our full-time faculty including Maternal Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Gynecologic Oncology, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reproductive Surgery, and Complex Family Planning. The Maternal Fetal Medicine divisions at both institutions provide state of the art high-risk care to pregnant women in both the inpatient setting, as well as, our fetal testing unit and serve as a referral center for the State of New Jersey. The Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Division provides residents a strong background in endocrine disorders, and all aspects of infertility treatments for women, including Ovulation Induction, IVF, and pre-implantation genetics, as well as advancing knowledge through the dedicated pursuit of both clinical and basic science research. The Gynecology Oncology Division makes use of all surgical and non-surgical treatments for patients with cancer, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery. The Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery division provides residents with a strong foundation in female pelvic floor disorders, including vaginal hysterectomy. Residents are involved in the care of all patients on all services at both institutions. Unlike other programs, no one subspecialty dominates the landscape in the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School – Cooperman Barnabas residency. Our department also has fellowship programs in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
Our fellowship programs are value added for our residents and in no way detract from their experience. In addition to outstanding clinical training, our residents also receive an education in research in women’s health. All residents complete research projects in the discipline of their choosing. Consequently, residents get a balanced education providing the stepping stone to successful generalist private practice, academic generalist practice, or subspecialty fellowship training - whatever is their desire to pursue, our residents are prepared for the next step in their careers.
I would like to thank you for your interest in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. I look forward to meeting you and feel free to contact me with any questions about our program!
