Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Radiology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Radiology is at the center of modern medicine, touching nearly every aspect of patient care. At Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and University Hospital, our department is dedicated to excellence in clinical care, education, research, and innovation. We are privileged to serve one of the most diverse communities in the region, providing comprehensive diagnostic imaging and image-guided therapies for patients with a broad range of clinical needs and complex conditions.

University Hospital, as a major tertiary academic medical center, provides an exceptional environment for both patient care and medical education. Our Level I Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center, together with our liver transplant, oncology, and other specialized clinical programs, expose our faculty and trainees to challenging pathology and an extraordinary breadth of clinical experience.

Across our subspecialty divisions, our faculty bring extensive expertise in contemporary imaging and image-guided treatment. We employ advanced technologies including state-of-the-art CT and MRI, PET/CT and SPECT/CT, and advanced breast and cardiovascular imaging. Our interventional radiologists provide minimally invasive therapies across oncology, vascular disease, hepatobiliary and transplant care, and women’s and men’s health. Throughout the department, our radiologists collaborate closely with our clinical partners, playing an integral role in multidisciplinary patient care.

Our people are our greatest strength. We have built a collegial department that values collaboration, mentorship, academic excellence, and the professional growth and well-being of our faculty, trainees, and staff. Following the recent merger of our residency programs, we are especially excited about the opportunity to create an even stronger educational experience characterized by close faculty mentorship, graduated responsibility, real-time feedback, broad subspecialty exposure, and meaningful opportunities for research and scholarly development.

Education and discovery are central to our academic mission. Our faculty are deeply engaged in teaching medical students and residents, mentoring trainees, conducting research, participating in clinical trials, and advancing both diagnostic imaging and image-guided therapies. Our goal is not only to prepare the next generation of outstanding radiologists, but also to foster curiosity, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to improving patient care.

The Department of Radiology has a vigorous basic and translational research program within its Divisions of Radiation Research and Functional Imaging. Students and post-doctoral fellows have gone on to secure excellent positions in medicine, academia, government, and industry. Our faculty enjoy international reputations in their respective areas of focused research and they serve as members of the National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP) and the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU).

Radiology is undergoing a period of remarkable transformation. As advances in artificial intelligence, imaging technology, precision diagnostics, and minimally invasive therapies continue to reshape our field, our department is committed to embracing innovation thoughtfully and responsibly while remaining firmly grounded in clinical excellence, collaboration, and patient-centered care.

I invite you to explore our department and learn more about our clinical programs, educational opportunities, research, and, most importantly, the people who make our work possible. We are proud of our history, energized by the opportunities ahead, and grateful for the privilege of caring for our patients and educating the physicians of the future.
