We talk about how important it is to take care of our patients, but we never talk about how important it is to take care of ourselves. While there is often not much we can do to reduce the demands on our time, GME has taken on the responsibility of increasing resident support to tip the balance from burnout to wellness. Mental health is an area of wellness that is often neglected due to stigmas around seeking emotional support. Yet it’s a major aspect of being a capable and successful doctor. Although communities of residents become very close-knit, they don’t always feel comfortable discussing their concerns or difficult experiences with peers and superiors. The Resident Wellness and Excellence Center is a free, confidential counseling service provided via GME to help all residents (and their families) deal effectively with stressors and pressure related to work, as well as personal issues that may affect resident well-being.
