Housing Information

Founded in 1666, Newark is steeped in history and simultaneously is also well renowned for its urban revitalization. Today, Newark is home to top educational, research and healthcare institutions. On our campus, you will find Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM), University Hospital, and the Rutgers Cancer Center of New Jersey. 0.4 miles from our campus, you will find the International Center for Public Health (ICPH)/ Public Health Research Institute (PHIR). Our location gives us proximity to the Branch Brook Park (home of the annual cherry blossom festival), the Newark Museum (the largest museum in NJ), Cathedral Basilica (a beautiful Gothic Revival architecture), as well as Newark Downtown (where you can get everything from contemporary to traditional food and art destinations to performance centers). The Newark Penn Station located in Newark downtown will connect you with many destinations including New York City. Newark also houses the Newark Liberty International Airport which can connect you to 48 countries in the world.

Off-campus housing

Postdoctoral researchers often find off-campus housing at locations within Newark or in the neighboring towns of Harrison, Kearny, Ironbound, Bloomfield, Montclair or Verona. The information about the housing opportunities described below, may be of interest to you. We have not investigated this information; therefore, this is not an endorsement. We encourage you to do your own research into these properties if it is of interest to you.

  • University Centre:  is a private development that houses students and professionals from a variety of different colleges, but is not operated by any college or university.  They are walking distance to campus, their apartments are furnished, and they typically have availability all year. They have flexible lease lengths and low deposit rates.

  • Robert Treat Hotel, located in downtown Newark, and is a great option for short to long term stays.

  • Hampton Inn & Suites, located in Harrison NJ, is also another option for short to long term stays.  The apartments that they have are furnished. 

  • The Tryp Hotel, located in downtown Newark offers rooms for short to long term stays.

  • 55 Union, a brand new residential complex in the Ironbound. 

  • Zillow is a site where you can find apartments for rent in Harrison, Kearny, South Orange, and many other cities in NJ.

  • Arbol is a new apartment community located just 1.2 miles from the medical campus, and are currently offering tours of apartments.  

  • Kislak Building  offers furnished apartments in the downtown Newark area.  The direct contact and general manager of the building is Mr. Qasim Tanveer, and his email is Qasim@kislakbuilding.com

  • Eleven80 is a high rise located in downtown Newark that many professionals have recommended, and they  offer short term  and longer term leases.  

  • 24Jones is a private development located within walking distance of the medical campus and hospital.  This building is located right across the street from 180 West Market Street.

  • Hahne & Co. is a new residential building that has recently opened in downtown Newark.

  • Harrison Station 300:  is a new residential building that has recently opened in nearby Harrison, NJ. 

  • Vermella:  is a new residential building that has apartments available in Kearny, Harrison, and other cities.

  • Teachers Village is a new development that has opened up on Halsey Street, currently accepting applications for apartments that have opened and additional ones that will become available in the coming months.

In addition to the options above, all Rutgers postdocs are eligible for short-term (maximum 1 year) temporary housing in the University-affiliated facilities listed on the Faculty and Staff Short Term Housing program website. These housing options are a close distance to the train to Newark. They consists of studio, one, and two bedroom apartments in Highland Park, New Brunswick and Piscataway (Busch Campus). Occupancy restrictions apply in all our units and we have a no pet policy. Apartments come fully furnished and include kitchen and linen set-ups. Utilities and internet are provided. Leases run from the 1st or the 15th of the month and can be as short as one month with a maximum of one year. Leases are not renewable but can be extended up to the full 12-month term if available.  A $500 refundable security deposit is required. A mandatory background check is required prior to acceptance. Please keep in mind that occupancy is constantly changing and is not guaranteed until an application is submitted and approved.


Postdoctoral researchers who are in towns located away from Newark can commute to Newark Penn Station and then take the Rutgers University shuttle.
The shuttle services to all students, faculty, and staff on the Newark Health Science Campus. All key services have a stop at the NJMS Medical Science Building (MSB) as well as RSDM, University Hospital, Rutgers Cancer Center of New Jersey, and ICPH/PHRI.Visit the Rutgers Newark Transit website for route maps and schedule.
