Research Interests:
The laboratory is engaged in research in two areas: 1. Mechanisms of alcohol addiction. 2. Mechanisms of general anesthetics. In addition to the fact that alcohol is a general anesthetic, these two research areas are related in terms of many of the techniques used, which include: electrophysiological recordings in brain slices and isolated neurons, morphological immunocytochemistry and behavioral approaches.
Our work on alcohol addiction is directed towards understanding the mechanisms by which ethanol increase the excitability of dopaminergic neurons. The laboratory is particularly interested in the role of the GABAergic and glutamatergic inputs to the dopaminergic neurons of the ventral tegmental area; a brain region mediates the rewarding effects of abused drugs including alcohol. Additionally, we are interested in the mechanisms underlying the adaptation changes in the mesolimbic circuitries induced by chronic alcohol (drug) exposure.
Our work on general anesthetics is directed towards understanding the mechanisms by which anesthetics induce sedation. There is recent evidence that the sedative effects of general anesthetics are associated with the endogenous sleep pathways.  Our works focus on the ventral lateral preoptic area (VLPO).
