Thank you for your interest in the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship program. I am excited to introduce you to our program which provides an outstanding training experience in pulmonary and critical care medicine.

We offer a three-year ACGME accredited Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship, as well as one- or two-year Critical Care fellowship positions.

Our goals are:

• to deliver high quality, hands-on clinical training


• to engage learners in scientific inquiry


• to develop fellow's skills as educators


• and to promote humanism and be mindful of fellow wellbeing

We also strive to enhance the individual interests of each fellow as their training progresses. Our overall mission is to train fellows to be outstanding clinicians, educators and leaders.

Fellows in the program rotate to three hospitals, the University Hospital, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and the East Orange VA Medical Center, each providing a unique experience to the Pulmonary and Critical Care fellow. Together, these three institutions create a comprehensive, robust training program. Core experiences include medical intensive care unit, pulmonary consultation, pulmonary physiology, and outpatient pulmonary medicine rotations. Fellows have unique opportunities to rotate to two nationally funded centers, the Global Tuberculosis Institute (GTBI) at NJMS and the NJ War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) at the VA. The clinical experience includes a variety of other rotations including surgical/trauma critical care, neurocritical care, advanced bronchoscopy, radiology, sleep medicine, and pulmonary hypertension to name just a few. Our dedicated and highly skilled faculty work closely with each fellow, and enjoy the collegial relationship that develops.

The unprecedented challenges facing health care, and our specialty in particular over the past years, have required significant changes in our practices. Our faculty and fellows worked together, with our larger organizations, to ensure the best possible patient care, continued and innovative learning for our trainees, and to preserve and promote wellness and resiliency amongst our Division. Our Division also created a rich database during this time in order to further our understanding and support future research studies relating to SARSCOV2. The effort, collaboration and empathy displayed by our trainees and graduates have been admirable.  I believe the lessons we have learned will lead to even more innovative curricula and training experiences.

At Rutgers NJMS we aim to recruit a diverse group of fellows who come together with the unified goal of immersing themselves in the field of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and in the breadth of experiences we offer.  We are very proud of our graduates and the long-term professional success they have had.
