Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery

Welcome to the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery based in Newark, NJ. As of July 1, 2013, the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act went into effect, integrating Rutgers with the two largest allopathic medical schools in the state: The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in Newark and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. The integration of our medical schools, along with other schools within the allied health scienes, made it possible to form the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS). The academic Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery is based on the Newark Campus, which is also where the residency and fellowship programs are located. The department is chaired by Dr. Soly Baredes, who has been the Chairman/Chief of the department for the past 24 years. He is one of the longest acting chairman in the country.

The department has a long history of treating patients with disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and related surrounding structures in the head and neck. In addition to providing excellent patient care in general otolaryngology, we have fellowship trained expertise in various otolaryngology subspecialties, including head and neck cancer surgery, rhinology, skull base surgery, otology/neurotology, cochlear implantation, head and neck surgical oncology, Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) and microvascular reconstructive surgery.

Along with exceptional patient care, we have a very strong clinical research program that has resulted in over 300 peer reviewed publications in the past 5 years. No other program in the tristate area has published more peer reviewed papers within the field of otolaryngology during this time. Our medical students, residents and faculty have presented numerous posters and oral presentations regionally, natinoally, and inernationally. Just this past September, we had 11 oral presentations at our national AAO-HNS meeting in San Diego.

Additionally, our department is a broad based training program devoted to training both academic and clinical otolaryngologists. Whether it is using Lasers or Robotic Surgery to remove tumors from the throat or implanting Cochlear Implants into deaf children, our faculty continue to provide excellent patient care with minimally invasive, cutting edge technology. Our emphasis on excellent patient care, extraordinary research, and a strong educational program has earned our department a reputation that ranks among the best in the nation.
