University Hospital (UH) has shown tremendous growth from its first days as a 25 bed city hospital in 1882, through 1979 when the current hospital building was built until today. As the principal teaching hospital of New Jersey Medical School, The University Hospital is the center of referral for many of the state's most advanced medical services and specialty care programs in urban Newark, New Jersey. The University Hospital offers a wide range of specialty services including northern New Jersey's only state designated Level 1 Trauma Center (incorporating a trauma-intensive care unit and the NorthSTAR helicopter emergency and critical care transport system), the Cochlear Implant Program, a neurosurgical intensive care unit and a special Brain Tumor Program, the Neurological Institute of New Jersey, a federally designated spinal cord injury program, The University Center for Bloodless Surgery and Medicine, and New Jersey's only Liver Transplant Program.

The hospital is staffed by 300 full-time attending physicians who are also faculty members of the New Jersey Medical School. The University Hospital has more than 19,000 admissions, 2,700 births, and 215,000 outpatient visits annually. Cooperman Saint Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC). New Jersey’s oldest (since 1865) nonprofit, nonsectarian hospital is dedicated to exceeding our communities’ highest expectations for compassionate care, health care excellence and superior service.

The Cancer Center at Cooperman Barnabas, a clinical partner of the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, offers a coordinated program including Medical, Surgical and Radiation Oncology with the expertise and compassion to treat a wide range of cancers and disease sites. For those with disorders of the chest, our thoracic surgery team provides the most appropriate minimally invasive surgical techniques. The majority of patients have video-assisted thoracoscopic, laparoscopic or robotic surgeries to minimize blood loss and reduce postoperative pain resulting in shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery to daily activities.
The Breast Center at the Ambulatory Care Center—one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive breast diagnostic centers—performs close to 60,000 procedures annually with coordinated care and patient navigation to the medical and surgical expertise and services available through CBMC.

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center has long been recognized as a leader in providing the highest level of patient care-delivering more than 5,800 babies annually, caring for more newly diagnosed cancer patients, creating breakthroughs in the field of infertility, and providing more than 100 medical and surgical specialty and subspecialty services.

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is accredited by the Joint Commission and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Jersey City Medical Center is one of only 401 hospitals in the U.S. to earn a Magnet Designation for Nursing Excellence, and the only hospital in Hudson County to have received the designation three times.

The Department of Veterans Affairs NJ Health Care System (VANJHCS) is a consolidated facility comprised of two main campuses and 14 satellite outpatient clinics serving the 628,000 veterans that reside in the state.

The medical centers offer a full range of services including acute medical, surgical, psychiatric, and nursing home care. There are also a variety of specialty programs and initiatives including Diabetes Education, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Prosthetics, and Homeless Outreach Programs which have been recognized for outstanding achievement both within the Department of Veterans Affairs and the general health care community.

An extensive VA research program exists in NJ, with almost 300 projects and an annual budget of $2.5 million. The VANJHCS has led the Department of Veterans Affairs in health services research that evaluate clinical practice guidelines for diabetic patients, and the East Orange facility was selected as one of the sites for a Center for the Study of War-Related Illnesses.
The VA intends to keep pace with technology and advances in the medical field, and is at the forefront of medical informatics. One of its biggest attributes is its Computerized Patient Record System, linking it to VA institutions across the country. It is a paperless system through which all patient care, including notes, orders, medications and scheduling is managed. This unique state-of-the-art system provides unlimited access to detailed comprehensive patient information, and is utilized by all practitioners at most VA sites, making it easier to manage and follow all aspects of patient care.
