African American and Hispanics have increased in numbers during the last decade according to the US census data. These groups, in general and minority males in particular, remain underrepresented in medicine.  To encourage African American and Hispanic men to become part of a healthcare workforce that mirrors the diversification of America, Men of Distinction at NJMS was created in September of 2011.

We are a coalition of physicians and medical students who aim to provide mentorship and support to African American and Hispanic males who are interested in or pursuing a career in medicine.

Mission

By providing role models in varied aspects of healthcare and in different stages of career development, we encourage underrepresented minority males to excel in their career paths and promote positive changes in their academic community and community-at-large. Our mission is consistent with the vision of New Jersey Medical School, “to create, transmit and utilize knowledge to shape the future of medicine and to enhance the quality of life for the people of New Jersey.” In addition, we hope to increase diversity and inclusion at the medical school by:

  • Taking action to ensure the participation and presence of critical masses of underrepresented minorities within our community of students and scholars.
  • Promoting our medical program as a viable and attractive option for underrepresented minorities.
  • Affirming inclusion of diverse perspectives in the curriculum.
  • Supporting forums for healthy and candid discussions of the pertinent issues.
  • Supporting underrepresented minorities in identifying role models and in developing professional networks.

Vision

Our organization strives to be a forceful brotherhood that is centered on the personal and professional development happening at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, supported by a growing network of passionate alumni, and grounded in community engagement. Every year, we will aim to create a cadre of mentors, each of whom will “lift as he rises,” ultimately creating and maintaining a healthcare workforce that reflects the communities we serve, eliminates health disparities, and ensures health equity.
