Critical Care
A 4 bed critical care unit provides high technology intervention for children who have experienced trauma or other life-threatening illnesses. Children in respiratory failure can be managed with conventional mechanical ventilation, high-frequency oscillation, or, when appropriate, mask noninvasive ventilation. Additionally, the unit is capable of monitoring or managing patients requiring invasive hemodynamic support or control of raised intracranial pressure. The PICU supports the state's only pediatric liver transplant program as well as the Level I trauma center for northern New Jersey. Air and ground transport teams are available for children throughout New Jersey in need of specialized intervention at University Hospital.
