Early Intervention

The Rutgers Early Intervention program, through a Letter of Agreement with the NJ Department of Health, offers developmental evaluations and assessments to children residing in Essex County, age birth to three years at no cost to the family. Referrals come from several sources including family members, physicians, and community agencies who suspect that a child may have a developmental delay.  The evaluation team is comprised of teachers, school psychologists, social workers, Child Development Specialists, licensed Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapists. The Early Intervention program works with agencies and families to develop an individualized family service plan (IFSP) for each child determined eligible to receive services. The toll free number to make a referral to the NJ Early Intervention System is 888-653-4463. For general information about Early Intervention, please call 973-972-8187.
