University Hospital in Newark, NJ is a principal teaching hospital of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, home to a Level 1 Trauma Center, Liver transplant program and comprehensive stroke center as well as a regional resource for specialized services and critical care. University Hospital is NJ’s public academic health center.

The Department of Veterans Affairs NJ Health Care System (VANJHCS) cares for a diverse population of veterans from throughout the state of New Jersey. The VANJHCS is a consolidated facility comprised of two main campuses, one in East Orange, and one in Lyons, 22 miles to the west of the East Orange Campus. The East Orange campus also contains one of four national regional centers of War Related Illness and Injury Study (WRIISC) which focuses on post-deployment health concerns. One area of research in WRIISC is respiratory problems related to burn pit exposure in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) is a 577-bed non-profit major teaching hospital located in Livingston, New Jersey. Since 1865, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, New Jersey's oldest nonprofit, nonsectarian hospital has worked to exceed highest expectation for compassionate, comprehensive health care. CBMC’s commitment to excellence has drawn national recognition. As New Jersey’s only certified burn center, CBMC draws adult and pediatric patients from all over the state. The Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division is the 3rd largest program in the nation and the largest Living Donor Transplant program in the U.S. The Heart Centers at CBMC offer a comprehensive array of cardiac services and procedures including Open Heart Surgery and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVR). The Cancer Center at CBMC, a clinical partner of the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, offers a coordinated program including Medical, Surgical and Radiation Oncology with the expertise and compassion to treat a wide range of cancers and disease sites. For those with disorders of the chest, the thoracic surgery team provides the most appropriate minimally invasive surgical techniques. The majority of patients have video-assisted thoracoscopic, laparoscopic or robotic surgeries to minimize blood loss and reduce postoperative pain resulting in shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery to daily activities.

CBMC is part of RWJBarnabas Health, New Jersey's largest integrated health care delivery system with acute care hospitals, a Behavioral Health Center, ambulatory care facilities, a statewide behavioral health network and comprehensive home care and hospice programs.
