Internal Medicine/Preventive Medicine Residency Program
Combined Internal Medicine - Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Residency
Starting July 2021, we have implemented a 4 year combined Internal Medicine - Preventive Medicine (IM/PM) residency. This is a wonderful opportunity for a resident interested in Primary Care, Preventive Medicine and Public Health! Preventive Medicine is a key aspect of all primary care; and Medicine specialists benefit from strong skills in public health and epidemiology. There are only 6 institutions in the US that offer combined residency training in Medicine and Preventive Medicine, and only 3 of those are in the North-East.
The IM and PM residency programs are part of the Department of Medicine at Rutgers NJMS, share two training sites (University Hospital and the Veterans Affairs NJ Health Care System) and have been in close collaboration since 2016 in the IM Urban Health track. The strengths of our IM and PM residencies complement each other to provide an optimal educational experience to trainees.
History:
In July 2021, the Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine Residency Programs established the combined Internal Medicine - Public Health and General Preventive Medicine (IM/PM) Residency. It was implemented with funding help from HRSA, through a 5-year Primary Care Training and EnhancementâCommunity Prevention grant to improve maternal mortality in New Jersey. The combined residency was initially implemented as a track within the categorical Internal Medicine program with focus on Women's health. It became a standalone ACGME accredited program as of July 2025. While women's health remains one area of focus for the program, trainees entering the IM-PM program are encouraged to pursue projects in their own area of interest.
In addition to robust training in Internal Medicine, the IM/PM residency mission is to provide residents with multiple training opportunities in population health centered on providing high quality care in underserved areas, such as Newark, NJ. The curriculum is specifically designed to include dedicated rotations in general preventive medicine (e.g., Health Promotion/Disease Prevention/ Veteran Wellness), Quality Improvement (e.g., University Hospital Quality and Patient Safety program), population health and epidemiology (Newark DOH). Currently, the program hosts 4 IM-PM residents and graduated its first trainee in June 2025.
