Curriculum


 

4-year Combined Internal Medicine- Public Health/General Preventive Medicine Residency

  • 30 months of Internal Medicine (IM) + 18 months of General Preventive Medicine and Public Health (PM)
  • 6+2 schedule during the first 3.5 years of training
    • PGY-1: 2 months of PM
    • PGY-2/3: 5- 6 months of PM
    • PGY4: 4-6 months of PM
  • IM rotations similar to categorical residents
  • PM rotations include Dept of Health, Maternal Health rotations at UH and VA, VA Health Promotion/Disease Prevention (HPDP), War Related Illness and Injury Study Center, QI rotations at all sites
  • Longitudinal research projects and mentorship through dedicated IM/PM faculty
  • Public Health and Preventive Medicine seminars during PM, ambulatory blocks and elective rotations
  • Longitudinal collaboration with community based organizations
  • > 15 credits graduate coursework in 5 core content areas are required for Preventive Medicine Boards
  • Graduates are eligible for Board certification by both ABIM and ABPM

  2. Ambulatory Care Curriculum

    • Online learning modules (Johns Hopkins)

    • Academic Half Days every Friday of the ambulatory block

  3. Preventive Medicine Curriculum

    • Weekly Preventive Medicine Seminars

    • Lifestyle Medicine Curriculum

    • Experiential exposure:
      • Department of Health
      • Emergency preparedness and response
      • Community health assessment

    • Research / program evaluation / health systems
