Urology Division


The Faculty of the Division of Urology is extremely diverse with expertise in all major subspecialties. The main campus is at University Hospital (UH) in Newark, NJ. Affiliated hospitals include the Veteran Affairs New Jersey Health Care System (VANJHCS), Newark Beth Israel (NBI) and Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) and Morristown Medical Center.

Dr. Robert E. Weiss is the Harris L. Willits Professor and Chief of the Division of Urology at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School.  He is also the Program Director for the Urology Residency Program.  Dr. Weiss specializes in urologic oncology surgery – treating   bladder cancer, renal cancer, prostate and testis cancer.  He also treats patients with kidney stones and benign prostate disease.  He has particular expertise in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, as well as neobladder reconstruction and partial nephrectomy. Dr. Hossein Sadeghi-Nejad is Chief of Urology at VANJHCS. Dr. Sadeghi-Nejad specializes in male infertility and erectile dysfunction. Dr. Amjad Alwaal is Associate Professor of Urology at Rutgers/ NJMS. He specializes in Urologic Reconstruction, Men’s Health, Impotence, Infertility and Voiding Disorders. Dr. Evan Kovac is Associate Professor of Urology at Rutgers NJMS and specializes in Urologic Oncology and Robotic Surgery. He has a specific interest in treating prostate cancer in the underserved population.

University Hospital is the main hospital affiliated with Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School. It is a level 1 trauma center and is affiliated with the Cancer Center of New Jersey and the New Jersey Stone Center, both on campus.  UH presents to opportunity to perform complex urologic trauma, reconstruction, complex urologic oncology, robotic surgery  and basic urologic procedures.

The Veterans Hospital presents robotic surgical procedures, complex urodynamics, procedures for sexual dysfunction and   fundamental urologic procedures.

Cooperman Barnabas Hospital

St Barn

Cooperman-Barnabas Medical Center offers exposure  complex robotic and oncologic procedures, renal transplant, complex reconstruction, transgender surgery as well as standard urologic surgery.  Pediatric urology is performed at Cooperman-Barnabas and Newark Beth Israel.

Morristown Medical Center

Morristown Medical Center presents complex robotic and oncologic surgery, female voiding dysfunction surgery and basic urologic procedures.
