EDUC 9050 – SURGICAL BOOT CAMP

NUMBER OF STUDENTS PER ROTATION: 10
PREREQUISITES: For students who plan to match into surgical or surgical subspecialty PGY-1 only
DESCRIPTION OF ELECTIVE: This is an intensive hands on course designed to review and practice essential skill sets needed to be well prepared for a surgery internship. The course will cover essential elements of relevant anatomy (cadaver dissections), basic surgical procedures, intubation, chest tube thoracostomy, central venous line placement, strategies for paperwork, answering pages, emergency decision making, case presentation on rounds, dictation of operative reports, etc.

Students will be required to demonstrate a variety of surgical skills and presentation skills will be assessed by an oral presentation of surgical cases, accuracy of medical documentation will be assessed by reviewing an operative report.
