Specialty Interest Organizations


Dermatology Interest Group


Description: DIG is an organization aimed at helping students who are interested in dermatology as a specialty. We provide information, resources, and events to help students understand what is required to apply for this residency and expand their passion for the field.

Events Held: We host panels where dermatologists speak about their day-to-day careers. We also hosted a student match panel. We will also host a dermatology SHELF review for M1 students. Other plans include: skin cancer screenings for the Newark community, recognizing melanoma on different Fitzpatrick skin types, and a dermoscopy lecture.

NJMS Society of Oncology (NSO)


Description: NJMS Society of Oncology seeks to provide medical students with insight into the field of oncology and opportunities to contribute to the field.

Association of Women Surgeons

(AWS)


Description: We are a specialty interest group focused on women in surgery and our goal is to help students become more exposed to surgery and what being a woman surgeon is like

Description: Interest group for the combine medicine-pediatrics specialty.

OBGYN Interest Group


Description: OBGYN Interest Group hosts events for those interest in OBGYN, provides research opportunities with OBGYN attendings, and provides shadowing opportunities for those interested in OBGYN. Additionally, advocacy/volunteering opportunities will also be offered.

Description: An organization that aims to promote student interest and exposure to anesthesiology.

Mobile Healthcare Association


Description: MHA serves as an out-of-hospital medicine/EMS physician interest group, and is dedicated to improving mobile healthcare systems in the Newark/UH community through education and community partnership. We also provide educational events to members of the Newark Community and teach them Bystander CPR. Additionally, we help students study certain topics related to emergency medicine and trauma.

Description: PM&R interest group: to increase student exposure to the field of PM&R

Description: We are a group that helps students explore the field of pathology by hosting speakers and organizing shadowing opportunities

Radiation Oncology Student Interest Group (ROSIG)


Description: The radiation oncology student interest group (ROSIG) aims to introduce medical students at NJMS to the field of radiation oncology, an innovative specialty that uses radiation therapy to treat various cancers. ROSIG hosts mock tumor boards, department tours, match panels, and research showcases among other events in an effort to raise awareness of radiation oncology and all that the field has to offer. We are excited to bring these events to NJMS and collaborate with other interest groups to show the wide-reaching impacts of radiation oncology on different specialties.

Interventional Radiology Interest Group (IRIG)


Description: The Interventional Radiology Interest Group offers a lecture series, holds workshops with industry specialists, and facilitates shadowing throughout the year so that students can learn more about this exciting field.



Events Held: We hold an interest meeting, workshops with industry supplies, a match panel, and an research//CV workshop.

Project Pediatrics


Description: Project Pediatrics is a Pediatrics interest group, and a cesl group which is involved in the NICU cuddle program, and a
PICU-based childhood play program, and works with New Hope Day Care in Newark to host weekly readings.

Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Interest Group (PCCMIG)


Description: We are an interest group introducing NJMS students to Pulmonary and Critical care careers, reviewing material, and connecting students to practicing physicians.



Events Held: PCCMIG has worked closely with Dr. Berman, the course director for the Pulm unit, to organize students to participate in ALA fundraisers and to host workshops reviewing Pulm/Crit Care procedures and materials. We also host lectures/seminars with practicing Pulm/Crit Care doctors.

Diagnostic Radiology Interest Group


Description: The student interest group for those interested in Diagnostic Radiology



Events Held: Informative presentations on what Radiology is and a forum for those interested in Radiology to get a chance to talk with Attendings or matched students on what radiology is and what it takes to match.

Vascular Surgery Interest Group (VSIG)


Description: The Vascular Surgery Interest Group (VSIG) is a
student-led organization dedicated to fostering interest in the field of vascular surgery among medical students. The group provides opportunities for students to learn about the latest advancements in vascular surgery, engage in
hands-on demonstrations, and network with experts in the field.

Gastrointestinal Student Interest Group (GISIG)


Description: The Gastrointestinal Interest Group (GISIG) is dedicated to fostering interest and providing education in the field of gastroenterology. Our mission is to enhance the understanding of the field of GI and procedures among medical students, promote professional development, and facilitate GI research/shadowing.

Orthopedics Interest Group (OIG)


Description: The Orthopedics Interest Group offers medical students educational and practical experiences in orthopedic surgery through lectures, panels, and hands-on activities. Students can attend educational sessions with orthopedic residents, participate in cadaver dissections to study joints, and observe outpatient care at the UH Orthopedic Clinic, which covers various subspecialties like trauma,

Exploring Cardiology Group (ECG)


Description: The Exploring Cardiology Group (ECG) aims to provide a multidisciplinary view of cardiology and early exposure to the field for the students of NJMS.



Events Held: We host an annual interest meeting and workshops for students (including ECGs, physical exam practice, and Step questions), and invite speakers to discuss a relevant topic in cardiology, such as nutrition, devices, or research.

Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN)


Description: We are the Neurology Interest Group on campus. Our goal is to help give students information related to the growing field of Neurology, offer them opportunities to gain exposure and experiences, and to offer incoming students interested in neurology mentorship on this path.



Events Held: We have traditionally had lectures related to neurology, workshops on neuroanatomy/ neuro physical exams, and match panels.

Association of American Neurological Surgeons (AANS)


Description: The Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) at New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) is a student-run organization dedicated to introducing students to the field of neurosurgery. The club provides a platform for those interested in neurological surgery to explore the specialty, gain insight into the latest research and clinical practices, and connect with professionals in the field. AANS at NJMS fosters a supportive community where students can engage in educational events, hands-on workshops, and networking opportunities, helping to guide and inspire future neurosurgeons.

ImmunoMed


Description: We are the Immunology in Medicine Specialty/Interdisciplinary Interest Group and we host events for students to get exposure in this field.



Events Held: We usually host our first general meeting with a guest speaker/clinician discussing the subspecialty of Allergy/Immunology/Rheumatology. We also host Skin scratch/prick testing training event every year, which is a test routinely done in Allergy/Immunology clinics. We also have another speaker event in the spring semester where we bring in a different professional in the field to talk about their experiences.

Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG)


Description: EMIG's mission is to provide exposure to the field of emergency medicine through shadowing opportunities,
hands-on skill workshops and informational panels involving residents, attending physicians and recently matched students.

Events Held: We hold coordinate shadowing opportunities and host a combination of panels and workshops on a monthly basis.
Our panels introduce and prepare students for a residency in EM, and our workshops align with the systems block schedule to provide critical skills training directly applicable to the field of EM and beyond.

NJMS ClubMed


Description: We are the Internal Medicine Interest Group on Campus. We provide students with informational and educational meetings that allow them to learn more about content they have learned in class, opportunities to meet faculty, and the option to meet upperclassman that can serve as guides to enhance their application for residency.

Ben Rush Surgical Society


Description: We provide exposure, mentorship, and skills training for students interested in general surgery and any specialties that are pursued through gen surg.

Family Medicine Interest Group


Description: FMIG is an interest group that promotes the specialty of family medicine to the student body and organizes workshops teaching the student body some of the skills acquired by family medicine practitioners.

CT Surgery Interest Group (CTSIG)


Description: The CT Surgery Interest Group hosts lectures with CT surgeons. We hope they will elucidate their career trajectory, how they have navigated thus far, and what the future looks like within the specialty. There will also be case discussions where we watch or discuss surgical procedures within the cardiac and thoracic space.
We also host skills sessions teaching universal technical skills for surgery and unique skills and tasks for CT surgery. CTSIG is a space to connect with upperclassman mentors
