MS and MBS Program Description

Master of Science (MS) and Master of Biomedical Science (MBS) Programs: These parallel degree programs are offered by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences on the Newark campus of UMDNJ, and both may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis.  The MS degree has a research thesis requirement. The MBS degree does not require a thesis, but does include a 2-credit research rotation.  The same courses are open to students enrolled in both programs. 

Degree Requirements

30 credits with a grade point average of “B” or better.

MS (Master of Science in Biomedical Science) - 25 credits of course work with a grade point average of “B” or better. Original laboratory research (5 credits) culminating in a written thesis acceptable to an advisory committee and the graduate school (thesis research option).

MBS (Master of Biomedical Science) - 30 credits of coursework and maintain a “B” average.

All master's students must take:

1.  Seminar in Biomedical Sciences (1 credit)

2.  Research in Biomedical Sciences – Research rotation – (2 credits)

3.  Any one of the following 3 options:

i) Fundamentals in Biomedical Sciences 1 (Fall) & 2 (Spring) – 6 credits over 2 semesters; one evening a week 6 – 9 pm.
ii) Molecular and Genetic Medicine – 7 credits, Fall semester with limited enrollment (for those contemplating application to Medical or Osteopathic Schools)
iii) Dental Physiology (Fall) - 5 credits, and Dental Biochemistry (Spring) - 4 credits; both with limited enrollment (for those contemplating application to Dental Schools).

Elective Courses as required to attain sufficient credits to graduate.  A complete list of available graduate courses can be found in the Spring and Fall Course Listings on the Course Information web page. By selecting specific sets of elective courses, students can also complete a concentration within their Master's degree, with current offerings in Biodefense, Neuroscience, Oral Biology, Pharmacological Sciences and Stem Cell Biology.
