Medicine - Pediatrics Practice

The unique educational experience within Med-Peds is centered within our outpatient continuity clinics
where residents are precepted by our Med-Peds trained faculty.

The continuity clinic experience is comprised of a combined practice where patients, (some-times as whole families), are seen by residents and attendings in a collaborative partnership. Located in the Ambulatory Care Center on the Newark campus, the combined practice ensures that while rotating through one specialty the skills of the other remain up-to-date.

The office affords the residents the opportunity to experience different styles of patient care while maintaining continuity and seeing a large variety of pathology. The clinic has multiple patient rooms, offices for discussion with fellow residents and attendings, and a treatment room for phlebotomy and vaccine administration. Functioning as a small group practice, the clinic strives to provide comprehensive primary care to a diverse group of patients. It is one of the most successful outpatient services within the two departments.

Our clinic practice ensures that there is continuity among residents and their patients. This is optimized by patients returning to see their resident doctor on their particular clinic day. Most patients know all of the residents and attendings by name. The patient base consists of both medicine and pediatric patients.  Our referrals come from the Emergency department, the inpatient floors, the nursery and the community. The continuity clinics in the Ambulatory Care Center have a well-equipped computer system to access laboratory and radiology reports. The campus encompasses several subspecialties in medicine and pediatrics, social work services, outpatient radiology services, and an extensive pharmacy.

Clinic attendance is required once a week in the afternoon during all months except Night Float and ICU rotations. A PGY-1 resident will see 3 to 5 patients per half day session, PGY-2 will see 4 to 6 patients per half day session and PGY-3 and 4's will see at least 5 patients per half day session. A typical clinic day always includes time devoted to education on disease entities and treatment strategies, as well as ample time to bond with attendings and residents within Med-Peds.

Residents are given education in general practice management and billing and coding as well. Using a mixture of online modules, practice questions, and faculty-guided instruction, residents will review the basics of billing and coding. They will also have the opportunity to review their own documentation and practice billing accordingly with direct faculty feedback. Residents also receive an introduction to “Performance Measurement” and receive quality metrics on their own clinical practices to ensure continual self-reflection and improvement. Residents work closely with ambulatory staff to provide comprehensive clinical care including coordinated-interdisciplinary care, telehealth visits, lab review, patient education, and social work referrals.
