Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Website of the Department of Neurology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. Our department is the oldest academic neurology department in the state of NJ and was founded in 1972 by Dr. Stuart D. Cook. Our mission is to provide excellence in medical education, clinical research, patient care and to provide community service.

Highly specialized clinical faculty provide care for patients with various neurological disorders in the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) and Doctor’s Office Center (DOC) at University Hospital, and consultative and in-patient services at University Hospital and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The Department has specialized programs in Stroke with a Comprehensive Stroke Center, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis (NAEC level 3 Epilepsy Center), Neuromuscular Disorders (MDA  designated clinic), Huntington’s Disease, Neurofibromatosis and Pediatric Neurology.

Our residency programs, which includes both Adult and Pediatric Neurology training have been in existence for over 50 years and are the oldest in the state of NJ. In addition, we provide fellowship training in Vascular Neurology. The Department's educational program is enhanced by volunteer faculty who contribute to the education of medical students and neurology residents.

The Department's research activities continue to expand. Clinical trials in multiple sclerosis, and stroke are ongoing. Basic research into disease mechanisms are performed in collaboration with the neuroscientists in the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience.

The Department of Neurology continues to serve the community by participating in patient and physician education programs at the local and national levels.
