Slide 24:  Heart:  Myocardial Infarction with Mural Thrombus

path2_24l_1.jpg

A. Heart, cross section of left ventricle, gross.  A lamellated thrombus is adherent to the endocardium of the left ventricular anterior wall, partially filling the lumen.  A white area of scarring, representing a healed infarct, nearly encircles the left ventricle, but is most prominent in the anterior wall.

B. Heart, low power.  Lamellated thrombus material adheres to the endocardium.

C. Heart, medium power.  Mural thrombus is adherent to thickened endocardium beneath which are vacuolated Purkinje fibers.  Hypereosinophilic myocardial fibers beneath this layer represent an area of recent infarction.
