The General Division

The General Division of the Department of Anesthesiology is responsible for a wide variety of trauma, general surgical, obstetrical, orthopedic, thoracic, and neurosurgical procedures. Under the direction of Vasanti Tilak, MD, residents in the Anesthesiology Department learn all facets of general anesthesia. Being a part of Rutgers, which is affiliated with University Hospital, exposes our residents to a large base of critically ill trauma patients. This large, busy city hospital is a Level I Trauma Center as well as a Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center.

The recently expanded ambulatory surgical center at University Hospital is a freestanding outpatient unit with five operating rooms and its own recovery room. Approximately 5,000 ambulatory procedures are done there each year. This environment allows the entire staff to concentrate on ambulatory patient needs with access to the full services of the Medical Center.

Nurse anesthetists (CRNA's) assist in the delivery of anesthesia and care of surgical patients within the Department of Anesthesiology. These fully certified and licensed professionals work together with our faculty physicians in delivering excellence in clinical care.

The section of Neurosurgical Anesthesia is an extremely active service performing over 1200 anesthetics annually. There are currently four full time anesthesiology attendings associated with this division. Members of this group provide anesthesia in the operating room and in the neuroradiology suite.

The physicians working in Obstetric Anesthesia are dedicated to the premise that every woman has the right to a safe and comfortable delivery. Our efforts are focused on realizing these goals. Obstetric anesthesiologists serve as on-site, full time consultants in the labor and delivery suite.  Along side our obstetrical colleagues, we are poised to assist in the management of the pain of labor and delivery, to administer anesthesia for cesarean sections, and to manage other emergencies that may arise. With over 2000 deliveries per year, our Residency Program provides extensive training in all aspects of obstetric anesthesia including the care of severely ill, indigent inner-city patients, private patients at community hospitals and middle-class patients in voluntary hospitals.

The Regional Anesthesia section has three anesthesiology attendings who provide regional anesthesia care to patients undergoing a wide array of surgical procedures.

First-year residents spend 8 months in this General Division, 5 months in the second year, and 1 to 5 months in the third year, depending upon their interests. They train under the guidance of the following list of doctors.
