The Male Student Support Program

The Male Student Support Program (MSSP) is a school based drop-out prevention program via the Orange Board of Education through Orange Preparatory Academy that seeks to enhance the academic performance of urban adolescent minority males. Program activities occur during the school day as well as after school and on weekends. The in-class activities are lead by the MSSP staff and include:

  • Group Discussions - a regularly scheduled (45 minute) class which uses didactic and group discussion formats to improve the student's behavior and academic decision making process. This component also includes academic skills assessments and targeted tutoring.
  • Guest Lecture Series - speakers are invited once each week to address the specific life skills isues, health promotion, crime prevention and career advancement.

The components are enhanced by:

  • Parental Component (Family Involvement) - Parents are required to attend a weekend retreat at the beginning of the year, and conduct monthly telephone contact with MSSP and/or school staff.
  • Mentor Component - Students are matched to volunteer mentors whose professional experiences are related to their own aspirations.
  • Community Service/Recreation Component - Each student is required to conduct one individual community service project and participate in all ten (10) of the group projects. Recreation activities are held on the second and fourth Saturday of each month.
  • Academic and Social Component - Each student is required to set personal and educational goals and to take necessary steps for impovement.  This component also includes academic skills assessments and targeted tutoring.
