Gneral Surgery Residency Application Process

General Surgery Residency Application Process

The Department of Surgery participates in the National Resident Matching Program. The Rutgers New Jersey Medical School surgical program is approved to graduate up to 13 chief residents each year and there are ten categorical first-year general surgical positions available. Thus, our training program is designed with the intent that all individuals accepted into a categorical program are expected to finish the program if their performance is satisfactory. Foreign medical graduates are not considered for categorical positions. We also accept residents into designated and non-designated preliminary positions.

The application process begins with the submission of an electronic application form (ERAS). We require three letters of recommendation in addition to the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (Dean's Letter) from your medical school, current Curriculum Vitae, personal statement, medical school transcript, and USMLE score reports. Only electronic applications will be accepted for review. Please do not call, write, fax, or e-mail the Program Director or Coordinator.

The interview process is both extensive and personalized, as we believe that resident selection is one of the Department's most important functions. The Interim Chair, Dr. James Guarrera, Program Director Dr. Anastasia Kunac, as well as many other members of the faculty, are involved in all phases of the interview process. The interview process includes:

  • A presentation overview of the program
  • Two faculty interviewers
  • A resident interviewer
  • An interview with the Chair or the Program Director
  • A tour of the facility
  • Time for candid questions to be answered by members of the resident staff.
