Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program Overview
Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program
Program Overview
The first-year fellow is immersed into the world of consultations and inpatient endoscopy at our high-volume special procedure units at University Hospital, East Orange VA, and Jersey City Medical Center. Fellows will learn the basics of endoscopy from full time academic faculty at these institutions, clinicians who enjoy and are dedicated to teaching. During this year fellows will also provide outpatient gastroenterology care through their continuity clinics at University Hospital as well as at the East Orange VA.
The second-year fellow will transition from consultations to a focus on general outpatient endoscopy. Fellows will perform outpatient endoscopies at University Hospital, and the East Orange VA learning the basics of pre-procedure care as well as peri-procedure and post-procedure decision making.
The third-year fellow will continue to focus on general outpatient endoscopy, while also gaining increased exposure to advanced and therapeutic endoscopy. The advanced endoscopy experience at University Hospital and Hackensack University Medical Center will familiarize the fellow with not just the basics of endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP, but also endo-bariatrics, endo-hepatology, POEMS, third space endoscopy, and other cutting edge endoscopic techniques. With minimal call responsibilities during this year, the third fellow is also expected to focus on the transition to independent practice, with more time outside of work for completing research projects, career development, and staying up to date on newly published research.
Throughout all three years there is dedicated time for both transplant and general hepatology, both in an inpatient and outpatient setting. While on their hepatology rotations, fellows will take care of both pre- and post-transplant patients while also seeing general hepatology consults. The outpatient hepatology experience includes pre-transplant clinic, post-transplant clinic, and general hepatology clinic. Dedicated time for research and electives is also integrated into all three years, with the opportunity for exposure to motility and inflammatory bowel disease.
