Eric Tien Yen Chyn, MD, CMD
Program Director, Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program/Section of Geriatric Medicine
Dr. Chyn is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program at Rutgers Health/New Jersey Medical School.
He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of British Columbia in 2009 and his Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University in 2013. He went on to complete his Internal Medicine residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Queens Hospital Center in 2016, followed by a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2017.
Since joining NJMS in 2020, Dr. Chyn has been instrumental in expanding geriatric services. He established the first dedicated geriatric care and consultation clinic within the Ambulatory Care Center and partnered with Trauma Surgery to launch the first inpatient geriatrics consultation service at University Hospital.
Katherine Fung, DO
Associate Program Director, Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program/Section of Geriatric Medicine
Dr. Fung is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Associate Program Director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program at Rutgers Health/New Jersey Medical School.
Before pursuing medicine, Dr. Fung developed an interest in the intersection of healthcare and law, earning a Master of Science in Jurisprudence (MSJ) from Seton Hall University School of Law in 2011. She then received her medical degree from Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2015. Dr. Fung completed her Internal Medicine residency at Bayonne Medical Center/Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2019, followed by a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at Hackensack University Medical Center/Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 2020.
Following her fellowship, Dr. Fung provided care to patients in the New Jersey State prison system, broadening her experience in serving vulnerable and underserved populations. Dr. Fung joined NJMS in 2022 to continue caring for adult and geriatric patients while helping to expand and strengthen the Geriatric Medicine Program.
Eloy Ruiz Mendoza, MD
Director, Geriatric Evidence & Research Initiative/Section of Geriatric Medicine
Dr. Ruiz Mendoza is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Rutgers Health/New Jersey Medical School and Director of the Geriatric Evidence & Research Initiative (GERI-AMAUTA).
He obtained his medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in 2016 and began his career as a primary care physician in a rural community in the Amazon region of Peru, where he developed a deep commitment to patient-centered care in resource-limited settings. He then worked as a research fellow at his alma mater before completing his residency training in Internal Medicine at Rutgers Health/New Jersey Medical School in 2023, and fellowship training in Geriatric Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2024.
Since returning to NJMS in 2024, Dr. Ruiz Mendoza has focused on providing comprehensive geriatric care, expanding consultation services at University Hospital, and advancing medical education and research in geriatrics through GERI-AMAUTA.
