University Hospital
Newark, NJ
University Hospital (UH) is a 519-bed, state-owned academic medical center and the principal safety-net provider for the underserved and underinsured populations of Newark and surrounding communities. As New Jersey’s busiest trauma center and its only liver transplant center, UH serves as a critical regional resource for specialized services and complex care. In 2020 alone, UH reported 83,122 emergency department visits, 15,572 inpatient admissions, 7,502 outpatient surgeries, and 3,977 inpatient surgeries. It is the largest provider of uncompensated care in the state and has been ranked among the best hospitals in Northern New Jersey by U.S. News & World Report.
Located in Newark’s University Heights section, UH serves as a principal teaching site for Rutgers Health and is supported by more than 785 active medical staff. With its dual role as a leading safety-net hospital and academic center, UH stands at the intersection of clinical care, medical education, and community health.
Fellowship training at UH offers comprehensive clinical exposure across both inpatient and outpatient settings. On the inpatient geriatric consult service, fellows manage a wide range of geriatric syndromes and work closely with multiple specialties, including trauma and orthopedics, fostering a truly interdisciplinary approach to care and ensuring a rich and varied learning experience. In the ambulatory setting, fellows train at the UH Ambulatory Care Center (ACC), where the Geriatric Care and Consultation Clinic provides a full-spectrum outpatient experience. Care is delivered through a multidisciplinary team that includes patient navigators, medical assistants, nurses, care managers, behavioral health specialists, and social workers, offering fellows a model of coordinated, patient-centered care.
