Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program - Our Mission

Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program
Our Mission

Mission Statement

The mission of the Geriatric Fellowship Program of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is to cultivate physicians to meet the demands of an aging society through patient-centered care, overcoming social determinants of health, community engagement, a geriatric workforce alliance, and pioneering research.

Program Aims

Rutgers Health/New Jersey Medical School is committed to educating students, physicians, and scientists to meet healthcare needs of medically underserved inner city communities in Newark, NJ. The main goal is to train and retain geriatric physicians for these communities, which are disproportionately affected by a national shortage of geriatricians. Through training and recruitment, we will strengthen geriatric care in inner city communities by improving access and engaging caregivers and community resources. The existing geriatric care structure of Newark and surrounding areas are segregated in silos of various health systems.

We aim to improve overall healthcare system efficiency by establishing a network of training sites. Our first step is to collaborate with the veteran administration. As the fellowship program grows, we will incorporate more education partners. We train our fellows in accordance with the Common Program Requirement, which can be summarized as in geriatrics 5M: mind, mobility, medications, multi-complexity, and matters most.

Our fellows will be engaged in quality improvement projects with a special focus of establishing an age friendly health systems in the primary care practice housed in the Ambulatory Care Clinic of University Hospital. Our fellows will also learn how to overcome social determinants of health through leveraging community resources. As a robust academic institution, our fellows are nurtured with cutting edge research in all medicine specialties. Our fellows will learn to translate clinical research into patient care and practice evidence-based medicine.
