The department of neurosurgery is having our second Virtual Meet & Greet on Wednesday, October 14th, 2020. This is the perfect opportunity to learn more about what our program has to offer, meet some of our residents, the Program Director, and our Chairman. Our Grand Rounds lecturer in September 30th, 2020 is Dr. Carl Heilaman, the Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at Tufts Medical Center. He is a Professor and the Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. Internationally renowned for neurosurgical excellence, Dr. Heilman specializes in surgery for skull base tumors, pituitary tumors, meningiomas, schwannomas and Chiari 1 malformations. He has served as the President of the North American Skull Base Surgery Society, the Society of University Neurosurgeons, the Boston Society of Neurology and Psychiatry, and the New England Neurosurgical Society. Dr. Heilman is board certified in Neurosurgery.

Our Grand Rounds lecturer on August 26th, 2020 is Dr. Steven Kalkanis, the chief executive officer, chief academic officer, and senior vice president of the Henry Ford Medical Group. He is actively involved in clinical trials and research and leads a translational research laboratory investigating the molecular genetic differences between short- and long-term brain tumor survivors with the goal of refining future personalized medicine treatment protocols. Dr. Kalkanis specializes in the treatment of all brain tumors including clinical trials; intracranial neurosurgery, spinal cord tumors, adult cervical and lumbar spine disease, general neurosurgery, and stereotactic neurosurgery. Our Grand Rounds lecturer on August 12th, 2020 is Dr. Randall Chesnut, a University of Washington professor with appointments in two departments: Neurological Surgery, and Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. He has particular expertise in surgery and critical care for traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, failed back surgery, and adult spondylolisthesis, as well as sports-related spine and brain injuries. It is our great pleasure to announce that Dr. Robert Spetzler, a world-renowned neurosurgeon from Barrow Neurological Institute will be giving our graduation lecture on June 25th at 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM EST titled "My Journey Through Neurosurgery". Dr. Robert Spetzler specializes in cerebrovascular disease and skull base tumors. We would like to formally invite you to our first annual Neurosurgery Research Symposium on February 21st, 2020. The Department of Neurosurgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and New Jersey Medical School, as well as the RWJBarnabas healthcare system, will be hosting this event. The symposium will feature cutting edge neurosurgery research from bench to bedside with a specific focus on epilepsy, brain injury, and neuromodulation. The faculty at NJMS and RWJMS, along with our neurosurgery residents, will be giving lectures, along with guest speakers Dr. Susan Masino and Dr. Robert Gross. Join the Department of Neurosurgery as we welcome Dr. Sean Grady, our Visiting Professor for the month of February. 

Dr. Grady was appointed the Charles Harrison Frazier Professor & Chairman of the Department of
Neurosurgery at the Perelman School of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania in March 1999. He received
his undergraduate degree from the University of California, San Diego and medical degree from
Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Grady's clinical focus is in the area of Cranial Base Tumors,
Pituitary Tumors, Meningiomas, Schwannomas, Malignant Skull Base Tumors as well as Cerebrovascular
Disorders, Aneurysms, AVM's. In addition, Dr. Grady performs general neurosurgery procedures for
herniated discs of the back and neck.

"The Life of An Academic Neurosurgeon"

Visiting Professor - Karin Muraszko, MD

Our first Visiting Professor this year was Dr. Karin Muraszko, who was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. She received her undergraduate degree from Yale University. She then continued to Columbia University in New York where she received her medical degree and completed her residency training in Neurological Surgery and completed fellowships in pediatric neurosurgery. Dr. Muraszko is an internationally renowned speaker who specializes in pediatric neurosurgery. She was the first woman to head a neurosurgery department at any medical school in the US. Dr. Muraszko currently serves as the Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Michigan and was the first woman to serve as chair of a neurosurgery department in the country.
