Dr. Michael Vives is an Associate Professor and the Chief of the Spine Division in the Dept. of Orthopedics. He has extensive experience in the operative and nonoperative treatment for a wide range of spinal disorders including disc herniations, spinal stenosis, disc degeneration, scoliosis, spinal fractures/spinal cord injury, and spinal tumors.
Dr. Vives’ expertise has earned him positions on the advisory editorial board of The Spine Journal, on the review/editorial board of The Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine, and as a section editor for SpineLine. He has authored nearly 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and has presented over 50 scientific talks at meetings at the national and international level.
He is an active member of many societies including the North American Spine Society, the Spine Study Group, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Dr. Vives has served on the Program Committee for the AAOS, and is currently the Chairman for the Scientific Program for Spine at the AAOS’ annual meeting, the largest meeting for practicing orthopaedic surgeons in the world.
Dr. Vives was elected to the medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha, while earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He was trained by some of the world’s most prominent spine surgeons while completing his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University and his fellowship in Spinal Surgery at the University of California, San Diego.
