Program Structure

Curriculum

The primary focus of the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Residency Program is education. At all of our training sites, the common goal is to develop competent, board certified pathologists. As a result, our graduates can pursue a variety of career options from fellowship training to academic practice, to community practice, to practice in a commercial laboratory.

There are many aspects of our program that allow us to provide an emphasis on education rather than service. Some of these include:

  • Board review sessions in anatomic and clinical pathology beginning in the first post graduate year and extending throughout the residency.
  • Access to online PRISE questions through the American Society of Clinical Pathology provided by the program to all residents.
  • Dedicated clinical pathology sessions to enhance CP education.
  • Pathology assistants available to residents to keep scut work to a minimum.
  • All residents adhere strictly to ACGME Duty Hours Standards, providing reasonable time for rest, study, and mental health/wellness.
  • Residents are able to attend and present at national meetings including USCAP and CAP.

Schedules

The annual master schedule for each resident’s rotations is released in May or June of the preceding academic year. Call schedules are determined monthly in the month preceding as well. Faculty and chief residents work together in order to provide every opportunity to accommodate individual requests. While an individual resident’s schedule may vary, every attempt is made to maintain a balance of experience and fair distribution of work load over the four years of residency.

The minimum core rotations are as follows (residents may rotate for a greater number of months than those listed below; elective time is permitted but not listed in the requirements):
